There are some songs that are special and elements of them that hit hard. One of the factors in such songs is how it is structured. From start to end, a song can keep you engaged with its twists and turns through its composition. At a microscopic level, every note in a melody holds the power to unlock relatable emotions and you become connected.

Most songs follow a traditional structure that has been used for many years, eventually becoming very predictable. But some artists do challenge this and carefully craft songs that break the typical format and create something totally new. Such songs are constantly challenging the ideals of how music should be delivered. Even though the arrangement on its own will never be the only cause of the song being ‘the best’, it surely plays an important role. A formulaic song structure may become the best hit, but does it lack an innovative perspective? This matter will always be subjective. But what’s clear is there is a lot of room for creativity.

A basic structure of a song consists of - intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus, outro also known as ABABCB structure where A is verse and B is chorus and C is bridge. Considering this, a flow of a song contributes to its defining mood or feeling, and that it is designed to trigger or deliver. The design decides how it affects listeners, induces emotions and becomes more and more relatable and catchy. Many popular songs use a predetermined recipe which is easy to cook and serve. This creates a system where a corporate standard is used to manufacture a song. Psychologically, humans like to engage in a variable conversation with different pitches and tones which a structure of a song provides through music. It can be very methodical, mathematical or mundane to compose a song that is structured solely as a product. That’s why many artists nowadays have taken imperfection as a gift to create music which is loosely bound to a pre-packaged structure.

Structure also defines the ascending or descending motion of the song. Having the verse gradually build towards the chorus is a technique that has been followed for a long long time. That being said, it shouldn’t be the norm that defines how a song should be created as it goes against the whole concept of creativity in such an art field.

It’s like a song which is rhythmless but still provides absolute pleasure. Structure shouldn’t be looked upon like a disadvantage but also shouldn’t be something to become obsessed with. The contemporary standards are considered the blueprint for a compelling song, but does this really apply to every single piece? Some of these songs are performed like poetry and build a great storytelling atmosphere. Many artists try to force their song into a specific structure thinking it's the only way. A song with a chorus or any other section can be something that listeners can remember and sing along to easily. It’s an effective ingredient to spice up the song, offer a way to make a song memorable, and often can help to form a masterpiece. It becomes an organised journey. If it works, it works, but it shouldn’t be a reason to limit an artist’s potential to compose without it. Music can still be groundbreaking without being entangled in structure.
Over the years, music has not just transformed the way we express ourselves but music itself has also transformed. Its evolution for many has been either revolutionary or straight up bad. They say modern music sucks, but does it really? Is music becoming more and more stale or is it heading in a direction never anticipated?

Over time, we have discovered more and more ways to blend sounds together. Even the ecosystem of making music has drastically changed. Previously considered restrictions due to technical limitations are challenged every single day by creators.

Availability of affordable and simple ways to produce music has given a boost to bedroom artists over the years putting a spotlight on hidden gems. This also gave exposure to interesting new ways these artists think and make sounds, breaking through a collective mindset of trends and styles, giving them the ability to stand as an individual artist, and in rare occasions, their own niche genre.

Recently, modern experimental music has a lot to do with observing the passage of time and recreating sounds. Capturing the essence of retro/vintage sounds and blending them with a modern perspective is what we hear today almost everywhere. The Lo-fi microgenre has taken over the world due to it being the foundation for indie artists. It induces nostalgia that relates to many of us while getting processed through modern technology. The traditional rule book that has defined what quality music should sound like has indeed been thrown out of the window.

Today, Hi-fi production is not essential at all, as more focus has been placed on the relatability of music. It has become more expressive and also more sentimental, allowing the beauty of imperfections and unpolished elements to be an integral part of music.

This does not mean that the production quality of music is ignored at all times. As mentioned before, music, like most art, is subjective, so it should not have a particular quality control system that is unilateral. The point here is that to create music, there should be no pressure on achieving a gold standard, or what has previously been defined as excellence in music. A painting doesn’t have to have all the colours on it with strokes going in the ‘right’ direction. It can be simple or even lack colour saturation and still be equally beautiful to look at. Exploring other aspects requires courage and determination. It challenges the manufactured industrial representation of art which many artists are achieving through a new form or experimental music.
